The Longer Story

About

In New Mexico we have a phrase that exudes the pride of being native–I was born here all my life!  Born in the pink hospital in Santa Fe, NM, Janine’s early years were spent in Taos, although she did spend six months in Stowe, Vermont at age seven. Growing up in Taos until she was ten, Janine thrived in its tri-cultural environment and attended public schools, gaining resilience from her upbringing in a single-parent household. Her academic excellence was evident early on, as she promised to change the world in her salutatorian speech at Santa Fe High School.

Janine’s commitment to making a difference led her to environmental protection through her work with the Santa Fe Watershed after graduate school. Her career evolved as she focused on education, teaching Spanish and Special Education, and becoming a Certified Academic Language Therapist. She specialized in supporting students with dyslexia and ADD, helping them not only to read but also to build confidence in their unique strengths.

Her journey into mindfulness began with exposure to Buddhism through her uncle and aunt, and it deepened during a period between her undergraduate and graduate studies. As a working parent, Janine turned to secular mindfulness to manage the demands of her life. She trained at UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center to teach mindfulness and later expanded her expertise in Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC™). The MSC training, which she pursued extensively and became certified in April 2024, helped her develop a kinder, more resilient approach to herself and others.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Janine found MSC particularly valuable for enhancing her parenting and personal resilience. She was inspired by research on self-compassion and its benefits, such as increased perseverance, motivation, and overall well-being. She now offers MSC programs for teens and adults, including mental health professionals, integrating these practices into her work. Janine is embarking on her second year teaching MSC for teens to all tenth graders at a local public International Baccalaureate high school.  She has taught MSC to staff at two local mental health non-profit organizations, a local mental health clinic with 50 employees and to various groups of professionals in Mexico City.

In addition to her mindfulness and educational endeavors, Janine has been an active member of her family’s 7th-generation real estate business in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Her roles as a member, co-chair, and chair have provided her with insights into the real estate industry and family business dynamics.

In 2023, Janine expanded her skills with Erickson International’s solution-focused coach training, aiming for PCC Level IFC certification. She combines coaching with her mindfulness and self-compassion practices to help clients achieve clarity, vision, and authenticity. Her diverse clientele includes realtors, pharmaceutical executives, event planners, returning professionals, and young adults. She specializes in supporting those with learning differences, confidence challenges, and those seeking to redefine their life’s narrative.

When she’s not teaching or coaching, Janine is dedicated to her own growth through regular meditation, self-compassion practices, and silent retreats, embodying the principles she teaches, besides spending time in nature with her two dogs, stretching her horizons with yoga and spending precious time with family. Her work is a reflection of her commitment to empowering others and guiding them towards their fullest potential.
